Sarcopenia in Old Age and Chronic Diseases: Sarcopenia vs. Cachexia
Kim Dae-Young

Park Ki-Deok
Abstract
Sarcopenia presents very similar pathophysiology and clinical features with cachexia from chronic disease. The main findings of these two conditions are loss of skeletal muscle mass and decreased strength. It is very difficult and confused to distinguish sarcopenia with aging from cachexia with chronic disease especially in old age people. But these two conditions show separate clinical entities. A proper evaluation and approaches for the old aged sarcopenic individuals is recommended for the differential diagnosis of these two conditions. Considering common aspects between cachexia and aging related sarcopenia, it is likely that the therapeutic approaches may prove effective in both conditions. Diagnostic tools that are available for these two conditions based on recent studies are described in this review article. Currently available or proposed therapeutic strategies for pre-cachexia, cachexia and sarcopenia are also briefly described.
